Tips to ensure your home is show-ready!

Category Property

Have you finally decided to put your house on the market? Well, then you're going to have to invest in a little TLC before you let prospective buyers walk through your front door.

Preparing for a viewing is a lot like preparing for a first date. It's an opportunity to show off your home in its best light, so it's important to make sure that everything is as clean and tidy as possible to make your house appear more attractive, and ultimately, to start receiving high offers.

Remember, you want potential buyers to be able to visualise themselves living in your home, which is why it's so important to put in some time and effort - but, as property specialists, we know it can be difficult to know where to start.

Here are some tips that will help you prep your home, so it looks its best when potential buyers come knocking:

Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of your home, so it's important that it looks spotless when someone pays a visit. Before a viewing takes place, make sure all surfaces are wiped down and appliances are free of any built-up dust or dirt. If there's a lot of clutter in the kitchen, try putting away any items that aren't essential to daily life, such as spare cutlery, so that the kitchen work area appears larger.

Living Area

A welcoming living area is essential for any house viewing. Make sure yours looks inviting and comfortable by removing any clutter, such as throwing out any old magazines or newspapers and making sure there are enough seats for everyone - in case potential buyers want to take a little break while looking around. It may also be helpful to have some fresh flowers or plants on your coffee table as it will not only make the area look more homely but also freshen the air.

Bedrooms

Your home's bedrooms should be filled with light, so open all your blinds and curtains or turn on lamps so that each room feels more spacious. Most importantly, make sure that beds are made up with fresh, ironed linens, and check that all clothes are either put away or hung up neatly on hangers. Also remove any personal items from bedside tables and dressers, and pack away charging cables.

Bathrooms

Make sure your bathrooms are sparkling clean by removing toiletries from countertops; wiping down mirrors and taps; replacing old, stained towels with fresh, new ones; and checking for leaks under sinks or around toilets. It is also a good idea to pick up and remove dirty clothes laying around in bathrooms because this could lead to a lingering odour that would immediately put off a potential buyer and leave you feeling embarrassed.

Pets

We all love our pets, but during viewings, they can sometimes be a distraction from what your home has to offer, or they can even scare away potential buyers who have allergies or phobias that you aren't aware of. Rather keep them out of sight temporarily, so that potential buyers can focus on the home itself instead of what might be hiding behind a door or under the bed! And don't forget to remove your pets' hair from rugs and furniture; and put their food, water bowls, and beds somewhere they won't be easily noticed.

Backyard

The outside area is often a big attraction for many people looking for a property, so if you have been neglecting your backyard, now is the time to give it a good clean up. Mow the lawn, trim all overgrown bushes or trees, rake leaves, and pick up any toys or equipment that could obstruct a potential buyer's view.
